Do

  • Keep domain names short and memorable (if possible)
  • Ensure that your web site address is widely published. i.e. on stationery, business cards, brochures and advertisements, along with email contact information for key personnel.
  • Use a sig file. Keep it brief. It should contain your company name, a brief description of your product or service, and the URL of your web site.
  • Keep your web site simple and straight-forward. Construct your site in such a way as to encourage repeat visits. Encourage interaction with visitors to your web site.
  • Consider news groups, mailing lists and blogs important resources for gathering marketing-related information.
  • Announce your product or service in a net.acceptable way and only in those places that welcome such announcements.
  • Consider creating a blog to promote your site, the blogging phenomenon is fast becoming the leading edge of the new “social Internet” and blogs offer many marketing advantages over static web sites, including the ability to push content out proactively, instead of waiting for the world to come to them.
  • Consider adding an RSS feed to your web site so visitors can receive updates automatically. Include a link to the feed on your site, and be sure to submit it to the various RSS feed directories.
  • Recreate Your Website or adding elements to it that dramatically increase its effectiveness. It could mean a new web design or merely adding elements that increase trust and credibility.
  • Understand you are going to have to learn how to promote and sell your business and that involves work and time.
  • Create a product or service that people want or need.
  • Find a source of targeted traffic or visitors that might be looking for your product.

Don’t

  • Violate the terms of service of Google’s Adsense Program; spam the search engines via black hat techniques like cloaking or keyword stuffing.  The penalties are severe, and can include banishment.
  • Announce your web site until it is completed and fully functional.
  • Make users register before they can receive information. Research has shown this approach repels many more people than it attracts.
  • Broadcast your message indiscriminately.
  • Make your email messages or news group posts any longer than they need to be.
  • Underestimate the speed at which bad news can travel throughout the Internet.
  • Don’t throw your money away.  First investigate, ask questions from other marketers to see if they are familiar with the product and recommend it.
  • Don’t forget you are a potential customer to every marketer out there.
  • Don’t get frustrated and give up because things don’t happen right away. Many of the top internet marketers took years to find the formula that led to their success.
  • Don’t rely solely on emailing to promote your business
